Gelders in Bredene Koksijde Classic breakaway

  • Race report

The Belgian was one of Friday’s race main protagonists.

The 15th edition of Bredene Koksijde Classic had a very fast opening hour, and it was only when the peloton reached the hilly part of the course that seven riders managed to break clear and create the first selection of the race.

Once the five climbs were behind them, the race headed towards the finish in Koksijde, but Soudal Quick-Step was determined to make the race hard. The team went on the attack numerous times, with the likes of Stan Van Tricht, Warre Vangheluwe and Gil Gelders. Eventually, it was Gelders who booked a place in a strong leading group of six riders. The breakaway turned out to be a strong one, working well together and making the bunch work hard in order to reel them in.

They were overhauled only with 1600 meters to go, and despite being caught so close to the line, the 23-year-old Belgian could look back on a solid performance, having been one of the most active riders of the day.

“After the hilly section, I made a good move and got into the breakaway. We worked well together there and tried to stay clear of the peloton. It’s a pity we didn’t make it to the finish, but overall, I’m happy with my ride today, as it was a good day at the front”, Gil said after the race.
