The former Italian Champion sits just a couple of seconds from the top ten at the Vuelta a Burgos, one of the month’s most important races.
A small town in Castilla y Leon, Pineda de la Sierra got to feature this year at the Spanish race, welcoming the riders after 178 kilometers. It was the day that brought the first gaps between the purple jersey contenders, although it needs to be said these weren’t as big as expected.
The uphill finish of Valle del Sol, averaging 7.7% over just 3.4 kilometers, started with one rider up the road, only for the favorites group to easily bring him back. The main moves then came inside the closing kilometer, on the steepest part of the climb, where Oscar Onley (Netcompany Ineos) attacked and took the victory that put him at the top of the general classification.
Just like one day ago, Filippo Zana was Soudal Quick-Step’s best placed rider at the end of the stage, and thanks to that effort, the Giro di Sardegna winner gained four places in the standings, where only ten seconds separate him from the top ten.
