A member of the Wolfpack since 2013, the 31-year-old Belgian gave us an insight into his life during the lockdown.

I must begin by saying that in Belgium we were pretty lucky, as we were still allowed to train outside and the weather was on our side, so I could train together with a friend and get some kilometers under the belt, as well as doing some core stability, to keep my body in shape. As you all know, I also took part in the Digital Swiss 5 in April, which was super hard; it felt like a one-hour long individual time trial, the effort was intense and you didn’t have a moment of respite, you just had to pedal and pedal.

To relax a bit, I went every day – on my Specialized fat bike, together with my son Maxim, to my dad’s farm and helped him out a bit there, by driving the tractor or feeding the bulls some potato and hay. I enjoyed every single moment, I can’t tell you how peaceful and relaxing it was, especially as this whole period was a bit crazy, seeing what was happening in the world.

It was nice to spend some time with the family, as normally we travel all over the world and I don’t get to stay that much at home, only during the off-season. But it felt great also to ride my bike every day, trying to do something different as much as possible. One day, I visited Patrick Lefevere and exchanged some words with him, another day I helped our sponsors at Deceuninck by delivering masks to their clients, while earlier this month I went for a 300km-long ride that took me through five cities: Gent, Brussels, Leuven, Mechelen, and Antwerp. That was special and kind of surreal, because there was no traffic and I could really enjoy the long and serene hours spent on the bike.

After the restrictions eased up a bit, I got a visit at the farm from Yves and Stijn, and I even went to the Ardennes, where Remco is training these days, to see him. It was nice to catch up with the guys and it made me realise how much I miss my Wolfpack family and being at the races with them. I can’t wait for the calendar to restart, so I can see everybody again.
