Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Gianni Meersman had the entire team pulling for him all day in hopes of a bunch sprint finish of Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn - Frankfurt on Wednesday. However, despite the best efforts of OPQS and other teams in the peloton, a three rider breakaway that escaped on the final ascension of the Mammolshainer Berg was able to stay away to the finish.
Simon Spilak (Katusha) won, with Moreno Moser (Cannondale) 2nd, as those two dropped their break mate Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R - La Mondiale) in the final kilometer. The peloton has been chasing the three down in the final, charging in just behind Moser and Spilak in the last few hundred meters. Andre Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) was 3rd, Meersman 6th.
Tony Martin — a German OPQS rider participating in a rare German race — attacked with about 47km to go, catching an earlier duo ahead with 46.7km remaining. However, that breakaway was caught around the time the peloton reached the Mammolshainer Berg. Moser, Spilak, and Pozzovivo went away soon after.
