Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Pieter Serry was the top finisher on the Monte da Groba (5.6% average gradient, 10% max ramp), finishing 38th as the peloton shelled many riders off the back with a blistering pace in the final kilometers of 177.7km La Vuelta a España 2nd Stage.
Nicolas Roche (Team Saxo-Tinkoff) won the stage, with Daniel Moreno (Katusha Team) placing 2nd and Domenico Pozzovivo (AG2R - La Mondiale) 3rd. The riders had counter attacked in the kilometer as Leopold Konig (Team NetApp-Endura) went off the front with 1.6km to go. Pozzovivo tried to go solo as the riders caught Konig, but Roche was able to catch and pass him and go on to win.
Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Pro Team) is the new race leader. OPQS looks next to a 184.8km Stage 3 on Monday, which includes another uphill finish.
