Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team may not have won the 140.5 km Tour of Oman Stage 2, but it was Peter Velits who put on a monster attack on a climb just before the finish. The peloton worked to chase down a four man breakaway — no Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling team riders made the escape group — and managed to catch the group after going full gas within the final 10km. The gap was roughly 14 seconds with just 5km to go. The gap was 3 minutes and 30 seconds at its largest.
Hilly terrain caused the peloton to blow apart, but Velits was in prime position to animate the race at the front. Unfortunately, the group caught him in the final 200 meters.
Sylvain Chavanel also attacked 10 km from the finish.
Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) took the win. Baden Cooke (GreenEDGE) and Tom-Jelte Slagter (Rabobank) rounded out the podium.
