Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Jan Bakelants once again made the breakaway of the day, and finished 31st in the 184km 5th Stage of Critérium du Dauphiné on Thursday.
Simon Spilak (Katusha) won solo out of the breakaway. Wilco Kelderman (Belkin Pro Cycling Team) and Adam Yates (Orica-GreenEDGE) finished 2nd and 3rd after attacking the peloton with 4km to go in the stage. Kelderman was able to cut his gap to Chris Froome (Team Sky) in the GC to 12" due to his aggression in the final kilometers. Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo), 2nd in the GC, surprised everyone when he attacked on the descent of the penultimate climb with 26km to go. He had a gap of about a minute on Froome in the peloton, but Sky was able to chase him down. In the process, many riders of the peloton lost contact due to the high pace on the last, Category 2 climb.
Bakelants remained in the chase group behind Spilak, but that group was eventually caught by the peloton.
OPQS looks next to 168km Stage 6 — another medium mountain stage. There are three Category 4 climbs. The finish is slightly uphill, but eventually flattens out before the finish line.
