The fireworks were no surprise at 160.3km Eneco Tour Stage 5, and Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Matteo Trentin was among the riders trying to set off a few of his own on Friday.
The Italian rider stayed away with Pablo Lastras (Movistar), out of an original four-rider escape group, until 3 kilometers to go in a stage that included 14 climbs. Trentin even fought back to the wheel of Lastras after he attacked when the gap to the peloton was falling.
Trentin's teammate, Niki Terpstra, waited in good position near the front in anticipation of more action on the finishing climb of Muur van Geraardsbergen. However, late race attacks made it a scramble to control the race.
Laurens De Vreese (Topsport Vlaanderen - Baloise) rode away from the group, but was eventually bridged to by Pavel Brutt (Katusha) inside the final kilometer. Brutt eventually was alone ahead, but Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team) launched the winning attack, going over the top of Brutt for the win.
Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Shimano) was 2nd, and took over the race lead. Brutt was 3rd. Terpstra finished 6th.
OPQS looks next to 173.3km Stage 6, which should be just as action packed with plenty of hills to climb.
