In January, we kicked-off a season-long series focused on unknown things about our riders. Very likely, everybody is aware how the Etixx – Quick-Step riders came into the sport or what are their biggest results to date, but few or none know what movies and music they enjoy, or where they like to spend their holidays. Here's your chance to find out all these.
Nickname: Can't say I have a nickname, it never sticked. The Italian riders in the peloton usually call me Marcello, so if this qualifies as a nickname, then there it is.
Favourite movies: I like James Bond movies, both old and new, because the mix of action and aventure keeps you glued to the chair right until the end, even though you are aware of the fact that eventually he'll be ok. Another movie series which is at the top of the list is Star Wars, which was really groundbreaking at its time and changed the world. Besides the story in itself and the fantastic visual effects, it also impressed me with the way it told the story Luke Skywalker's journey from zero to hero, with all the transformations this implied. You have to love Star Wars! And don't tell me you've never dreamed of having a laser sword!
Favourite books: By far, my favourite one is the Tour de France roadbook, especially the last pages, with the Champs-Élysées stage. I have great memories from there, it's a very special location, one where I think almost every rider dreams of winning.
Favourite video games: I like to play FIFA and Grand Theft Auto, two great games which help you take your mind off stressful things, but which at the same time give you adrenaline and are really fun. It's a good thing I don't have too much time to play, because I get easily addicted.
Favourite holiday destination: One thing I noticed is that sometimes you don't need to go far away in order to discover beautiful places. I enjoy going to the beach in northern Germany, but I'm also for visiting and discovering new places and countries. Most recently I went to Poland and the Czech Republic and I spent some quality and relaxing time there.
