The German, one of the standout neo-pros of 2017, won't ride anymore this season.
Maximilian Schachmann underwent surgery last Friday in Hamburg on the injury he suffered in his right heel, after a crash on stage 5 of the Tour de Pologne. The first CT scan taken in Poland indicated multiple fractures in his right calcaneus, a diagnosis that was later confirmed by a specialist in Hamburg, where he was brought for further examination the following morning after the crash. Due to severe swelling, it was not possible to perform a surgery before last Friday.
The surgery went well and Max will now have a long period of rehab before he will be able to fully use his foot again. If everything goes well, the 23-year-old Quick-Step Floors rider should be on cue for the December training camp, where the team will reunite ahead of the new season.
"Of course, it is a big disappointment. I was getting in good shape, and although I was not at 100% in Poland, I felt I was getting better and better. Despite this not being an ideal situation, I don't want to let this injury drag me down. I can't change the outcome, so I just have to look forward. I am really motivated to come back and I hope to return recovered and ready to kick off my 2018 preparation together with the team, in December", said Max Schachmann, who this season impressed in a wide range of races, from the Tour de Romandie and Tour of California to both events at the National Championships.
