Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team made at least one rider was near or off the front at the 165.7km Stage 2 of Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco, from Güeñes to Vitoria-Gasteiz on Tuesday.
The stage, which was seemingly coming down to a sprint finish until one rider took a race winning flier with slightly more than 1km to go, keeps the general classification lead well within reach for Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team going into Stage 3. Daryl Impey (GreenEDGE Cycling Team) held off the peloton for the victory, with his teammate Allan Davis placing 2nd. Davide Appollonio (Sky Procycling) was 3rd.
Martin Velits and Peter Velits both finished in the top 20, with Peter placing highest in 13th. Martin Velits finished 18th. The team was spotted moving up quickly in the final kilometers, including getting prime position following a roundabout.
Jerome Pineau was perhaps the most aggressive rider of Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team, making a five rider break and staying away from the 7km point until 13km remained. The escape group was initially Pineau and two other riders, but two others bridged not soon after. The break had as much as a seven minute gap at one point.
