A crash disrupted the bunch sprint at the 98th edition of Brussels Cycling Classic.
With four wins under his belt, Fabio Jakobsen was one of the outright favourites at the start of Brussels Cycling Classic, the 201.4km-long race which packed 13 climbs and several cobblestone sectors. For that very reason, Quick-Step Floors helped with the chase behind the sixescapees who were allowed a maximum lead of three minutes, before sending Rémi Cavagna on the attack inside the final 40 kilometers.
The Dwars door West-Vlaanderen victor drew a response from three riders, and the newly-formed group quickly bridged to the riders in the lead and continued to press on, despite the gap being cut back to a mere minute with 25 kilometers left. It took a lot of effort from the bunch to bring back this move, some 15 kilometers from the finish in Brussels, next year's Tour de France Grand Depart.
As the sprinters' teams made their way towards the front of the pack, Fabio Jakobsen was well-placed on the wheel of Florian Sénéchal, who was on the verge of launching the Dutch neo-pro with the finish line in sight, only for a crash to throw the script out the window. With Fabio caught behind the crash, fortunately unscathed, Florian was left to carry the flag for Quick-Step Floors and didn't disappoint, coming close to his second podium of the season, as the race was won by Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe).
On Sunday, our team will be again in action at a one-day race, Grand Prix de Fourmies, which was won twice by Quick-Step Floors since being upgraded to a 1.HC event in 2005.
