The Danish rider has signed a new contract that will see him stay with the team through 2021.
The 23-year-old Kasper helped Deceuninck – Quick-Step become the world’s number 1 cycling team in 2018, with a series of strong rides in both the classics and his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España. He then went on to be part of the six-man squad that won the World Team Time Trial Championships in Innsbruck, becoming only the third neo-pro in history to claim gold in this discipline.
Speaking in a video from the team’s training camp in Calpe, Asgreen said: “I am really happy to announce that I have signed an extension of my contract with Deceuninck – Quick-Step and that I will be riding with the team until the end of the 2021 season. I am really excited about it! Patrick gave me this opportunity and I didn’t take very long to consider it – it was a no-brainer for me!”
The young Dane – who will start his season in February, at the four-day Tour La Provence – continued: “It is quite a long contract now and I have three years to learn and develop. We have some very good riders, who are proven winners and I am looking forward to learning from those guys and enjoying many more beautiful moments, such as last year’s Worlds TTT in Innsbruck, which was the highlight of my neo-pro season.”
Deceuninck – Quick-Step CEO Patrick Lefevere was content with having Asgreen on the team for the next three years: “Kasper has proven his class from the very beginning, playing an important role in many of our victories in what ended up as being a record-breaking 2018 season. He has a lot of potential and plenty of room for improvement, and these are just some of the reasons that give us satisfaction for having retained his services.”
