The Frenchman put in another strong showing and claimed a well-deserved medal in Plouay.
For the third consecutive year, a Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider finished in the top 3 of the European Championships time trial race. Fresh off his great win at the French Nationals three days ago, Rémi Cavagna was our team’s sole representant at the start in Plouay and didn’t disappoint, navigating the 25.6km course handsomely and posting the fastest result at the intermediate sprint.
The fifth-last starter, Rémi continued in the same vein and covered the undulating route in 30:35, the new provisional benchmark at the finish. Only Stefan Kung (Switzerland) bested him by the time the race concluded, but the 25-year-old from Clermont-Ferrand saw the glass half full, drawing a lot of confidence from his runner-up place, France’s best ever result at the European Championships in the race against the clock.
“I felt very good and came here with a lot of confidence after my victory at the Nationals, so I rode without any kind of pressure, just enjoying this opportunity. I work hard to improve my time trial and seeing the results my hard work brings makes me very happy. I gave my best today and I can easily say that it was one of my finest performances in an individual time trial”, Rémi said after Monday’s race in Plouay. “Now I’ll turn my attention to the Bretagne Classic, which I’ll do with the team Tuesday. It’s a nice race and I am motivated to help the Wolfpack get a good result.”
