Heavy rain, strong headwind, low temperatures and a 15km climb to top it off – stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia made for a tough day in the saddle, but Remco Evenepoel showed a maturity beyond his age, and helped by a very solid Deceuninck – Quick-Step team, put in an impressive ride that propelled him onto the overall podium.
The Belgian finished just outside the top 3 in Ascoli Piceno, but was obviously content with the result he got on Thursday’s summit finish, his best since the start of the race, as it gave him an important confidence-boost.
