The “Hurricane of Heukelum” leaves his mark on the race at his first participation.
For the sixth time in his career, Fabio Jakobsen took home the points jersey at a stage race, capping off a solid week of racing in Hungary, which yielded two stage wins that put him at the top of the individual victory ranking five months into the season.
Having started the day leading the green jersey standings, Fabio was tied with Rudy Barbier (Israel-PremierTech) on the number of points, and the Dutchman got involved at the first intermediate sprint of the final stage, adding five points to his tally and basically sealing his victory. After being distanced on the slopes of Kékestető (12.1km, 5.6%), Jakobsen was immediately surrounded by his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl teammates, who paced the Dutchman, helping him finish comfortably inside the time limit on Hungary’s hardest climb.
Fabio, who was no stranger to podium ceremonies this week, made one more trip there Sunday afternoon to receive the green jersey, which he added to the ones he won earlier this year at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana and Volta ao Algarve.
“I’m very happy, we had a good race here, we rode as a Wolfpack and we now leave from the Tour of Hungary with a good feeling. Two stage wins and the green jersey – which is the cherry on the top – make for a strong week, which gives us a lot of confidence and motivation to work for our next goals of the season”, said Fabio after the race.
