Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Serge Pauwels was the top finisher (35th) in a 141.3km mountain stage that produced the stage winner, and the new GC leader, from a breakaway of about 18 riders. No OPQS riders were in the escape group.

Jakob Fuglsang (Radioshack-Nissan) and Leopold Konig (Team NetApp) eventually broke away from the lead group, and Fuglsang eventually dropped Konig as well. Di Luca, who was the previous GC leader, attempted to chase but gave up late in the stage.
