Remco Evenepoel is now tenth on the general classification.
The second of the three stages that the peloton gets to spend in the Netherlands at this year’s La Vuelta was a really quiet one until the final kilometer, when a crash that took place just before the bunch sprint split the field, leaving a reduced group to contest the victory, which went to Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe).
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl escaped the pile-up and concluded the stage safely in the bunch with all its riders, out of which Remco Evenepoel came home first, gaining several places in the general classification and jumping up to tenth. Our team was very prominent from 15 kilometers to go, setting a steady tempo at the front of the bunch once the escapees were reeled in with the likes of Rémi Cavagna and even Julian Alaphilippe and protecting the young Belgian up until the final three kilometers.
The race continues Sunday with another opportunity for the sprinters, at the end of a pan-flat stage in Breda, before a rest day during which the riders will travel to Spain.
