The Belgian took another good result after his solid outing at last month’s Deutschland Tour.
Yves Lampaert confirmed his strong form ahead of the World Championships which will start next week in Australia by racking up another top 10 – his seventh of the season – at the Grand Prix de Fourmies, one of the last appointments of the Coupe de France.
Animated by a strong breakaway that kept fighting until the final seven kilometers, when it was eventually caught, the 197.6km race was controlled by several teams, including Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, who put in a huge amount of work to keep the escapees’ gap in check throughout the day and make sure it would come down to a bunch sprint.
Unfortunately, with three kilometers to go, a massive crash happened on the narrow roads, taking many of the favourites out of contention, including European Champion Fabio Jakobsen, who was caught behind and lost contact with the bunch, which split into numerous small groups. Yves Lampaert was the one who carried the flag for the Wolfpack, and he didn’t disappoint, sprinting against some of the world’s top fast men and taking an impressive sixth Sunday afternoon.
