Johann Tschopp (BMC Racing Team) took over the GC lead by attacking on the final climb to the finish of the 164.1km Tour of Utah Stage 5, passing the remainders of a 10 rider break that detonated on the ascent. He gained more than a minute on Christian Vandevelde (Garmin-Sharp-Barracuda), and now has a 38" lead going into the final stage that includes plenty of brutal climbing. Wolf Creek Ranch alone has ramps of 22 percent.
Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Levi Leipheimer took a chance at a potential stage victory, and cutting into the GC gap, by attacking what was left of the peloton shortly after Tschopp went solo. He was with a select group of four into the final few kilometers, but could not hold the pace into the final kilometer. He finished 5th on the stage.
