Soudal Quick-Step’s Dane finished second in the road race.
Kasper Asgreen came agonizingly close to his maiden victory of the season, at the National Championships which this year were organised in Herning. The 29-year-old was part of a select four-man group which rode clear from the peloton after Casper Pedersen got caught on the final lap and ended up fighting for the win Sunday afternoon, at the end of the 218.5km race. Despite the big effort he put in at the front and in the wind, Kasper managed to produce a strong sprint that netted him second behind Rasmus Pedersen (Decathlon Continental).
It was the second medal in just three days for Asgreen – who came mere centimenters from what would have been his second win in the road race – after the silver he took in the individual time trial, and our team’s fourth podium at this year’s Nationals.
“You always want to win, but I am content with how today went even though I didn’t take the victory because I gave my best out there. When we went away in four and worked well together and somehow managed to hold off the chasers. I did my best sprint, so hats off to Rasmus, who did a very good race. It was close, but in the end he was faster. There’s not much else to say, just that I come away with two solid performances at the National Championships”, Kasper explained.
