As the peloton splintered, and only about 30 riders remained in the final kilometers of the 234km Clasica Ciclista San Sabastian on Tuesday, Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team missed out on the key move that further split up the group into two on a descent.
Luis Leon Sanchez (Rabobank) saw an opportunity to attack just as two groups were coming back together. Several riders tried to bridge to him, but could not and were brought back by the select chase group as Sanchez held a 12" gap going into the final kilometer. He won the race solo, with Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) besting Gianni Meersman (Lotto-Belisol) for 2nd place.
Zdenek Stybar was the top finisher for OPQS, in the top 50.
