Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team’s rider finished a strong seventh on home soil.
Viktor Soenens is having an impressive season, and the Belgian from Aalter racked up another result that confirmed it, Saturday afternoon, when he finished in the top ten at one of the hardest and most prestigious events on the U23 calendar, Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Comprising seven classified climbs, the Belgian one-day race came to life with around 80 kilometers to go, when a 23-man group comprising many of the favourites formed and established a promising gap on the peloton. The leaders worked well together and managed to extend their gap until the final hour of racing, when Jarno Widar (Lotto Development) attacked on La Redoute, fragmenting the group. The Belgian rode to victory, while behind, the others fought for the top ten.
The only Soudal Quick-Step Devo Team rider present in the main move of the day, Soenens put in a solid effort there and took seventh, around half a minute behind his countryman. It was the 19-year-old’s eighth top ten of a season which has also seen him win the best young rider jersey at O Gran Camiño, where he raced together with the World Tour team.
