Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Tom Boonen won the Kristallen Fiets for the fourth time on Wednesday. It's an award organized by Het Laatste Nieuws for the best Belgian rider of the year.
Boonen won the award with 638 points. Philippe Gilbert was 2nd with 524, and Thomas De Gendt 3rd with 304 points.
Boonen won because of the regularity he showed during the year.
"Boonen deserves the award because he started winning in Qatar, and he stopped only in September with Paris-Brussels," Gilbert said.
"Thanks to everybody, I'm happy because the jury was formed by riders, former riders — people from the world of cycling," Boonen said. "It was one of my best seasons ever. The Classics and the TTT World Championship were great and unforgettable moments. I think we have to be proud also as a nation. Glibert and De Gendt are also super riders, and we have other great talents in Belgium. I think the future of our sport in Belgium will be brilliant."
OPQS rider Kevin De Weert also won the prize as 2012 Best Helper!
