Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team decided it wouldn't just settle for the predicted sprint finish at the 154.7km Stage 7 of Tour de San Luis. OPQS rider Michal Kwiatkowski, who had been in GC contention for much of the stage race, decided he would also play a role in the breakaway of the day on Sunday.
The peloton, knowing the GC time was only a few minutes for members of the break, kept the advantage to a minimum. The break was reeled in 25km from the finish, which left OPQS to try and set up Mark Cavendish for the bunch sprint. OPQS moved Cavendish to the front inside the last 3km, but it was Mattia Gavazzi (Androni) who won the final stage. Peter Sagan (Cannondale) was 2nd, and Max Richeze (Lampre Merida) placed 3rd. In a chaotic sprint, a rider made contact with Cavendish and almost caused a crash. Cavendish arrived safely, but was unable to contest the risky sprint.
